Part 4 of 6: Biblical Work Ethic and Cheerful Giving vs. Coercion

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury:

In Part 3 we established that the early church practiced radical voluntary generosity while affirming private property. Today we examine two related biblical principles that communism systematically undermines: the dignity of work and the freedom of cheerful giving.

The Biblical Command to Work

Scripture consistently presents work as good, meaningful, and required.

“For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: ‘If anyone is not willing to work, don’t let him eat.’” (2 Thessalonians 3:10).

Paul is not being harsh. He is protecting the dignity of work and the responsibility of each person to contribute. The same principle appears throughout Scripture:

God Himself worked in creation and called His work “good.”
Adam was given work in the garden before the Fall (Genesis 2:15).
Proverbs repeatedly praises diligence and warns against laziness.

Because every person is made in the image of God, work has inherent dignity. It is one of the primary ways we exercise the dominion God entrusted to us and provide for ourselves and others.

Cheerful, Voluntary Giving

Just as work is personal and responsible, giving is to be free and joyful:

“Let each man give according as he has determined in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Corinthians 9:7 WEB)

Biblical giving flows from gratitude and love, not from state mandate. The moment giving becomes compulsory, it ceases to be generosity.

Communism’s Rejection of Work Ethic and Voluntary Giving

Communism rejects both the biblical work ethic and voluntary giving. It replaces personal responsibility with state control and cheerful generosity with forced redistribution.

When the state guarantees equal outcomes regardless of effort, the incentive to work is undermined. When the state seizes resources to “redistribute,” giving is no longer voluntary — it is coerced.

The slogan “From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs” sounds compassionate. In practice it punishes the diligent, rewards idleness, and destroys the incentive to work. When the state takes the fruit of a person’s labor, the motivation to produce is undermined and dependency grows.

History shows the results:

In the Soviet Union and Mao’s China, forced labor and unrealistic production quotas led to exhaustion, famine, and death.
Under the Khmer Rouge (led by Pol Pot), the entire population was conscripted into collective labor camps. Refusal or insufficient productivity could mean execution.
In every major communist regime, the promise of shared abundance produced shortages, black markets, and widespread poverty, while the ruling class lived in privilege.

The biblical pattern is personal responsibility + voluntary generosity.
The communist pattern is forced labor + forced redistribution.

One treats people as image-bearers responsible before God.
The other treats them as instruments of the state.

Closing of This Portion of the Case

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury: the Bible calls every person to diligent work and to cheerful, voluntary giving. Communism undermines both by replacing personal responsibility with state coercion. The evidence from Scripture and from history is consistent. The only question is whether we will heed it.
