Is Hell Real?
Is hell real? This is not a theoretical question. It is the most urgent reality every person faces. Salvation means rescue — from what? From eternal punishment in a place the Bible calls hell. Jesus spoke more about hell than anyone else in Scripture. The gospel exists to deliver people from it.
Many dismiss hell as outdated fear-mongering or something a loving God would never allow. Yet the Bible speaks with clarity and urgency: hell is real. It is conscious, eternal punishment — existence cut off from God’s presence and blessings.
What Is Hell According to the Bible?
The Bible uses four main terms:
Sheol is the Old Testament place of the dead.
“For you will not leave my soul in Sheol...” (Psalm 16:10).
“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in Sheol, where you are going.” (Ecclesiastes 9:10).
Hades is the New Testament term for the place of the dead.
“In Hades, he lifted up his eyes, being in torment…” (Luke 16:23)
“…Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them… Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.” (Revelation 20:13-14)
Gehenna is the primary word Jesus used for the place of final punishment (often translated “he”). It draws from the Valley of Hinnom, a place of burning.
“…Whoever says, ‘You fool,’ will be in danger of the fire of Gehenna.” (Matthew 5:22)
“It is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into Gehenna.” (Matthew 5:29-30)
“…Fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in Gehenna.” (Matthew 10:28)
“…It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having your two hands to go into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire, where their worm doesn’t die, and the fire is not quenched.” (Mark 9:43-44)
Lake of Fire is the final destination.
“The devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur… They will be tormented day and night forever and ever.” (Revelation 20:10)
“If anyone was not found written in the book of life, he was cast into the lake of fire.” (Revelation 20:15)
“Hell” is conscious, eternal punishment in a resurrected body suited for everlasting judgment — the lake of fire. It as a place of unending misery and agony where the fire never goes out.
The Bible Shows That People Go There — and What Happens
Jesus spoke of hell more than every other biblical writer combined. In His first major sermon He warned of the fiery hell (Matthew 5). He will say to people on His left:“…Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels… These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” (Matthew 25:41, 46).
The same word “eternal” describes both punishment and life.
Jesus told of a man who died and went there: “In Hades, he lifted up his eyes, being in torment… ‘I am in anguish in this flame.’ … between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you are not able, and that no one may cross over from there to us.” (Luke 16:23-26).
This is a place of torment, thirst, agony, and fire. Once there, there is no escape.
At the final judgment: “If anyone was not found written in the book of life, he was cast into the lake of fire.” (Revelation 20:15).
Jesus further describes the fate of those who do iniquity: they will be cast into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 13:41-42).
Paul gives the clearest description of the penalty: “who will pay the penalty: eternal destruction from the face of the Lord and from the glory of his might.” (2 Thessalonians 1:9).
The Bible also speaks of unquenchable fire and an undying worm (Mark 9; Isaiah 66:24), everlasting contempt (Daniel 12:2), and no rest day or night.
The Bible describes conscious, ongoing punishment:
Torment and flame (Luke 16)
Weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 13:42)
Unquenchable fire and undying worm (Mark 9; Isaiah 66:24)
Eternal destruction from the face of the Lord (2 Thessalonians 1:9)
No rest day or night; smoke of torment forever (Revelation 14:11)
Everlasting contempt (Daniel 12:2)
Those in hell never repent. They continue in rebellion, hating God and sinning forever. The punishment is retributive, not remedial. Because the sinning never stops, the punishment never catches up.
There are degrees of punishment based on the light and gospel truth rejected: “That servant who knew his lord’s will, and didn’t prepare, nor do what he wanted, will be beaten with many stripes, but he who didn’t know… will be beaten with few stripes.” (Luke 12:47-48)
It will be more tolerable for Sodom than for those who saw Jesus’ works and rejected Him (Matthew 11:22-24). Those who trample the Son of God and the blood of the covenant face more severe punishment (Hebrews 10:29).
How Do People Go to Hell?
Every person is a sinner. Unforgiven sin is punished forever. People go to hell by rejecting Jesus Christ and remaining in their sin and unbelief. They store up wrath (Romans 2). Jesus said it would have been better for Judas if he had never been born (Matthew 26:24).
Every unforgiven sin of every person who rejects Christ will be justly punished forever. Real people face real judgment based on their response to Christ.
False alternatives fail the text. Annihilation cannot stand because the fire is unquenchable and “eternal” matches the “eternal” of life in Matthew 25:46. Universalism and similar views contradict the clear statements of everlasting exclusion and punishment.
How to Avoid Hell
There is only one way of escape: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
“…Jesus, who delivers us from the wrath to come.” (1 Thessalonians 1:10)
“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.” (John 14:6).
Jesus bore the judgment on the cross so that those who trust Him never face it. The Scripture is the means the Holy Spirit uses to persuade and save.
Hell is real because the Bible says it is real.
The cross is real because the Bible says it is real.
Turn to the Lord Jesus Christ today and be saved.
Voices Who Affirm This Biblical Teaching
Martin Luther taught that Jesus’ own words about the eternal fire and the final judgment must be accepted exactly as they are written, without softening or explaining them away.
John MacArthur declares: “Hell is eternal, conscious punishment. There is no way around this.” He insists the passages in Matthew 25, Mark 9, and Revelation 20 describe a real place of ongoing judgment from which only Christ can rescue a person. “The Truth About Hell” sermon.
John Piper strongly affirms the historic biblical teaching of hell as endless, conscious suffering. He teaches that the vivid warnings of Jesus (unquenchable fire, weeping and gnashing of teeth, eternal punishment) are not exaggerations or mere metaphors that soften the reality — they point to something even more severe. Wes Huff puts the Bible’s logic in plain terms: without Christ, “Everybody is going to Hell.” He points to the clear statements that no one is good enough on their own and that the judgment described in Scripture still stands — including separation from God’s presence. Lee Strobel examined the same texts and concluded that the Bible teaches a real place of existence completely cut off from the presence of God.
Ken Ham affirms the plain statements of Jesus as the appointed Judge who will send every unrepentant person into the eternal fire.
