What Is the Bible? A Complete Guide to God’s Word

As a follower of Jesus Christ, I can tell you with full confidence: the Bible is not merely an ancient religious text or a collection of human ideas. It is God’s Word — His living, breathing revelation to humanity. For over two billion Christians around the world, including me, it is the authoritative foundation for life, faith, and eternity. The Bible has transformed my heart, guided my steps, and given me unshakable hope. And I believe it can do the same for you.

This guide is written from the heart of a believer who has seen the power of Scripture firsthand. Let’s explore what the Bible truly is.

The Bible Defined

The word “Bible” comes from the Greek biblia, simply meaning “books.” Yet it is far more than a library. It is a unified collection of 66 books written over 1,500 years by more than 40 authors — yet all under the direction of one divine Author.

We who trust Christ hold firmly to what the Apostle Paul declared under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit:

Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness
— 2 Timothy 3:16, WEB

As John MacArthur has faithfully taught for decades, “Everything God’s Word says carries authority because of Who authored it… Scripture is the only divine authority.” The Bible is not a book of suggestions or opinions. It is the very voice of God speaking to us today.

Two Main Parts: Old Testament and New Testament

1. The Old Testament (the Hebrew Scriptures)

These 39 books lay the foundation: creation, the fall of man, God’s covenant with Israel, the law, the prophets, and the promise of the coming Messiah. It is the same Scripture Jesus Himself quoted and fulfilled.

2. The New Testament

These 27 books reveal the climax of God’s redemptive plan - the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the birth of His Church. From the Gospels to Revelation, every page points to Jesus as Lord and Savior.

How the Bible Was Formed

The Bible did not come together by accident. God sovereignly guided His people to recognize and preserve His Word. The early Church did not “create” the canon; the inspired writings revealed themselves through the Holy Spirit’s work.

Apologist Wes Huff explains that the 27 books of the New Testament are those recognized as carrying this unique, inspired authority — the Church is the product of divine revelation in Scripture, not the other way around.

Lee Strobel, who set out as an atheist journalist to disprove the Bible in his bestselling The Case for Christ, ended up convinced by the overwhelming historical evidence for the reliability of the Gospels and the New Testament manuscripts. The Bible has been remarkably preserved.

The Central Message of God’s Word

From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible tells one story: a holy God creating a good world, humanity rebelling in sin, and God pursuing us with relentless love through the promised Messiah — Jesus Christ — who died for our sins and rose again.

Ken Ham of Answers in Genesis puts it beautifully: the Bible is “a revelation from the One who knows everything.” It is not the word of men but the very Word of God.

Charlie Kirk has rightly pointed out that the Bible has one divine Author speaking through many voices — yet one consistent truth that stands against the chaos of our culture.

Pastor Josh Howerton boldly declares, “The world has been lying to you about the Bible. We’ve got receipts.” And he’s right. Scripture is sufficient, powerful, and able to make us “wise unto salvation” (2 Timothy 3:15).

Why God’s Word Still Matters Today

In a world full of shifting opinions, the Bible stands as unchanging truth. It comforts the hurting, convicts the sinner, equips the saint, and points every soul to Jesus. As John MacArthur reminds us, “The only authority in the universe… is God, and the expression of His authority is in the Word of God.”

For believers, the Bible is not just informative — it is transformative. It has shaped laws, art, music, ethics, and entire civilizations because it is the very breath of God.

How to Start Reading God’s Word

If you’re new or returning to the Bible, I encourage you as a fellow believer:

  1. Begin with the Gospel of John — it was written so “you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.” This is the most often recommended way.

  2. Read a faithful translation like the American Standard Version (ASV) for accuracy, or another clear, trustworthy one.

  3. Use a study Bible app.

  4. Ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes as you read a little each day.

Personally, I started from the beginning and read the entire Bible straight through to the end in the traditional format. The second time around, I went through the chronological version. Both approaches are excellent. Reading cover-to-cover in order gives you the full sweep of God’s redemptive story from creation to the new creation. It helps you see how everything connects and builds toward Jesus. The chronological Bible adds another rich layer by letting you experience the events in the actual order they happened — placing the prophets alongside the kings, the Psalms with the historical moments that inspired them, and the New Testament letters in their historical context. It brings the grand narrative to life in a fresh way and deepens your appreciation for God’s perfect timing.

Here is the heart of the gospel in the words of Scripture:

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only born Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
— John 3:16, WEB

Final Thoughts

As a believer, I can say without hesitation: the Bible is God’s love letter to you. It is living and active. It has the power to save, to sanctify, and to sustain you through every season of life.

Whether you are exploring faith for the first time or have walked with Christ for years, open God’s Word today. Let it speak to your heart. Let it point you to Jesus — the Author and Finisher of our faith.

The same God who inspired every page is the same God who is ready to meet you right where you are.
