It’s a Heart Issue: Do You Really Believe?
You’ve heard it — or maybe said it yourself: “I believe in Jesus. I believe He is Lord.” But Jesus gives a sobering warning that cuts right to the heart of what that really means. In Matthew 7:21-23 He says:
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will tell me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, in your name cast out demons, and in your name do many mighty works?’ Then I will tell them, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you who work iniquity.’”
These aren’t casual outsiders. These are people who made a loud profession of faith. They called Him Lord. They did religious things in His name. Yet because their lives didn’t match a heart surrendered to the Father’s will, Jesus says He never knew them.
It all comes down to the heart.
True Belief Happens in the Heart
That’s why Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, wrote in Romans 10:9-10:
“that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes resulting in righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made resulting in salvation.”
Real belief isn’t just words or head knowledge. It’s heart belief that produces righteousness. Saying ‘Jesus is Lord’ only counts when your heart has fully surrendered to Him.
Love for Jesus Shows in Obedience
Jesus connected the dots even more directly in John 14:15:
“If you love me, keep my commandments.”
Love for Jesus naturally shows itself in obedience. Keeping His commandments isn’t the root of our relationship with Him — it’s the beautiful fruit of a heart that genuinely loves Him. Obedience flows from love, not as a burden but as the overflow of a surrendered life.
Martin Luther captured this powerfully: we are saved by faith alone, but “the faith that saves is never alone.” True faith always bears fruit in a changed life and obedience to God’s Word.
Genuine saving faith submits to Christ as Lord. It’s not enough to admire Jesus or claim Him with our lips. Saving faith involves repentance and a heart that yields to His authority. Real faith isn’t just attending services or knowing Bible facts. It’s being equipped by the Word in accountable relationships so we actually walk in obedience, following Jesus closely and helping others do the same.
The Question Only You Can Answer
So here’s the question we all have to answer: Do you really believe? Not the “Lord, Lord” kind of belief that sounds convincing but produces no obedience. Not a faith that picks and chooses which parts of God’s Word to follow.
Heart belief confesses Jesus as Lord and lives like He is Lord. It loves Him enough to keep His commandments. It results in righteousness instead of excuses or empty religious activity.
If the Holy Spirit is stirring your heart right now — if there’s any area where your words say “I believe” but your life has been resisting — that’s an invitation, not condemnation. God is ready to give you a heart that truly knows Him.

Believe in your heart. Confess with your mouth. And let that heart belief produce a life of loving obedience. That’s the faith that saves. That’s the heart Jesus knows.
