Jesus’ Resurrection and the New Birth
You did nothing to cause your first birth. You did not choose the timing, the parents, the body, or even the fact that you would exist. Life simply came to you. The new birth works the same way.
The resurrection of Jesus is the proper way to understand what it means to be born again. New life is possible only because Jesus actually rose from the dead. In the new birth the old self dies, and we are raised to life in union with the resurrected Christ. The same power that brought Jesus out of the tomb is the power that brings a sinner out of spiritual death. There is nothing you contribute to the act itself — just as there was nothing you contributed to your natural birth.
The Biblical Evidence
Jesus stated the requirement without qualification:
“Most certainly I tell you, unless one is born anew, he can’t see God’s Kingdom.” (John 3:3)
Peter identifies the means:
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,” (1 Peter 1:3)
The new birth occurs by the resurrection. The living hope of the Christian life is not vague optimism; it is the direct result of a historical event.
Paul presses the same truth with greater force:
“But God, being rich in mercy, for His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ — by grace you have been saved — and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,” (Ephesians 2:4–6)
“We were buried therefore with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life.” (Romans 6:4)
These texts describe participation that God initiates. The believer is made alive with Christ and raised with Him while still dead. The language is not merely illustrative; it is the reality of union with the risen Lord. Dead people do not raise themselves. God alone raises the dead.
How This Has Been Understood
John MacArthur has consistently described regeneration as a spiritual resurrection. The sinner is as passive in the new birth as Lazarus was when Jesus called him out of the tomb. Lazarus contributed nothing — no decision, no cooperation, no residual life that could respond. God alone raises the dead. The present age is the time in which these spiritual resurrections occur between Christ’s rising and the final resurrection of the body.
John Piper emphasizes the wording of 1 Peter 1:3: the new birth and its living hope come through the resurrection. Remove the resurrection and the new birth has no foundation and no power.
R.C. Sproul observed that Scripture repeatedly presents regeneration under the figure of spiritual resurrection. This is the Holy Spirit applying to the believer what Christ accomplished in His death and resurrection.
Martin Luther used the same pattern for the Christian life itself: the old self is put to death and the new creature is raised. The believer lives by continual participation in Christ’s death and rising.
Why This Matters
Consider what changes when this truth is clear. Assurance no longer rests on the quality of your feelings, your decision, or your performance. It rests on a finished event outside you—the same event that raised Jesus and, through union with Him, raised you.
Holiness is no longer a matter of trying harder in your own strength; it is powered by the same life that raised Jesus from the dead. Suffering is endured with living hope because the resurrection has already begun in your spirit and will be completed in your body.
A believer who understands this does not treat the new birth as a past decision to be remembered fondly. He treats it as a present resurrection life to be lived — life that was given, not achieved.
Just as you had nothing to do with your first birth, you have nothing to do with being born again. The same power that brought Jesus out of the tomb is the power that brings a sinner out of spiritual death.
That is the gospel.
Resurrection is New Birth
