21 Myths Series: Myth 14 — Does Satan Rule Hell with a Pitchfork?

Pop Culture & Everyday Myths (Myths 11–16)
What the Bible Actually Says vs. What Culture Thinks

Myth 14: “Satan rules Hell with a pitchfork.”‍ ‍→ Not biblical; he faces judgment.

Pop culture paints a vivid picture: a red, horned devil with a pitchfork, sitting on a throne in a fiery Hell, ruling over tormented souls like a dark overlord. You see him in cartoons, Halloween costumes, movies, video games, and even medieval art inspired by Dante’s Inferno. The image draws from pagan gods like Pan (horns) and Poseidon (trident turned pitchfork).

It’s entertaining fiction — but completely unbiblical.

What the Bible Actually Says About Satan and Hell

The Bible never portrays Satan as the ruler of Hell. Here’s the clear teaching of Scripture:

  • Satan is not in Hell right now. He roams the earth as “Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walksaround like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” (1 Peter 5:8) and even accuses believers before God’s throne (Job 1–2; Ephesians 2:2; Zechariah 3:1).

  • Hell was prepared as punishment for Satan, not his kingdom. Jesus Himself said, “…Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels” (Matthew 25:41).

  • Satan’s final destiny is defeat and torment. At the end of the age, Satan will be thrown into the lake of fire, where he “…will be tormented day and night forever and ever.” along with the beast and the false prophet (Revelation 20:10). He is not the king of Hell — he will be its lowest prisoner.

John MacArthur summarizes it powerfully: “Satan is not the king of hell, he is not in hell, and he’s never been there… When the devil gets to hell, he’s not going to be in charge — he will be the lowest being there.”

The Bible describes Satan as a deceiver who can even appear as an “angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14), not a cartoonish red monster with a pitchfork. The fiery pitchfork image comes from later folklore and art, not Scripture.

Why This Myth Matters Today

This popular myth trivializes evil, judgment, and spiritual reality. It turns Satan into a comic villain with his own independent realm instead of a defeated rebel under God’s sovereign control. The result? People underestimate the seriousness of sin, spiritual warfare, and the reality of eternal judgment.

Scripture presents Hell as real, conscious, eternal separation from God — a place of punishment for rebellion. Yet the gospel offers incredible hope: Jesus has already defeated Satan through His death and resurrection (Colossians 2:15; Hebrews 2:14). Victory belongs to Christ alone.

Martin Luther often fought the devil’s accusations by pointing to the cross: “I admit that I deserve death and hell… For I know One who suffered and made satisfaction on my behalf. His name is Jesus Christ.”

Understanding the biblical truth creates urgency for the gospel, humility before God’s justice and mercy, and vigilance against the real schemes of the devil (Ephesians 6:11–12).

Conclusion

The myth of “Satan ruling Hell with a pitchfork” makes for fun Halloween costumes and cartoons, but it distracts from the far greater reality: God reigns supreme. Satan’s rebellion will end in total defeat, while salvation is freely offered to all who trust in Jesus Christ.

Don’t believe the caricature. The Bible presents a sobering warning — and an even greater hope. Satan is a defeated foe on borrowed time. Christ is King, and His victory is eternal.
