Jesus Is the Only Way: Why “Every Religion Says That” Is Not an Answer

Some people say every religion claims to be the way, so Christianity is nothing special. The first part is often true. The conclusion is not.

Yes, religions make exclusive claims. Islam does. Hinduism does. Buddhism does. Secular worldviews do it too. Wes Huff is right: even the person who says all roads lead to God still shuts the door on the person who says only one road does.

So the objection does not do the work people think it does. If every religion claims a path, that only proves the claims collide. It does not prove they are equal, true, or false.

Christianity does not stand apart because it is exclusive. It stands apart because of what it claims happened. Other religions tell people to climb toward God. Christianity says God came down to us in Jesus Christ.

Shared Exclusivity Is Not Shared Content

“Every religion says that” sounds broadminded. It is usually a way to stop the comparison before it starts.

The comparison is the point. Other systems hand the worshiper work: keep the code, complete the ritual, purify, improve, hope the effort is enough. Christianity announces finished work. Jesus died and rose. Salvation is received, not achieved.

Other religions are human beings reaching for God. The gospel is God reaching for man. One path is human achievement. No other faith claims that God Himself entered history as a man, died for His enemies, and bore the judgment His justice required.

A shared habit of saying “this is the way” does not make those two messages the same.

God Became Man

“The Word became flesh and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the only born Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14).

This is the center. God did not send a new ladder. He came.

God does not accept people because they finally become good enough. He accepts them because of Jesus. Salvation comes by grace alone, through faith alone. The believer does not hand God a record of improvement. The believer receives Christ’s record as a gift.

Other religions either pretend the sin problem is small or hand you a list to fix it. The gospel says the opposite. You cannot repair yourself. You trust what Jesus already did.

Jesus is the way because He came from the Father and laid down His life. Eternal life is not another climb. It is found in the Son who came to us.

The Claim Is Historical, Not Merely Religious

The objection treats every exclusive claim as the same kind of claim. It is not.

Other founders say, “Walk this path.” Jesus said He is the path, then died, and His followers said God raised Him. That is a different claim. Some will deny it, but it cannot be reduced to “every religion says that.”

Lee Strobel asked a medical question in The Case for Christ: could Jesus have survived the cross? Dr. Alexander Metherell’s answer was no. The scourging drained Him. The cross suffocated Him. The spear finished the proof. Jesus died. Then the tomb was empty, and those who had watched Him die said they saw Him alive.

If that testimony is false, John 14:6 is only a sentence. If it is true, Jesus is not one more teacher with one more way. He is the one God raised, and therefore the one through whom people come to the Father.

Justice is getting what you deserve.
Mercy is not getting all you deserve.
Grace is someone else taking what you deserve.

Every religion can talk about justice and effort. Christianity says God came to us in Jesus. On the cross, justice was satisfied. Mercy was purchased. Grace is the gift: Jesus took the sentence so sinners could go free.

That is why “every religion claims to be the way” does not make the claims equal.

“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to theFather, except through me.’” (John 14:6).

Grace Changes the Kind of Claim Being Made

“for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast.” (Ephesians 2:8–9).

That sentence is why the claims are not equal. The biblical order is: grace first, obedience after. Legalism says work produces acceptance. The gospel says acceptance produces work.

“There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaventhat is given among men, by which we must be saved!” (Acts 4:12).

Other religions can produce discipline, community, and insight. They do not produce this structure: God comes to the undeserving, does the work Himself, and offers the result as a gift. One kind of exclusive claim says, here is the path; start climbing. The Christian claim says, here is the Son. He came. He died. He rose. He saves those who trust Him.

That is the difference the popular objection never touches. It notices that many religions speak with certainty. It ignores that only one of them claims the holy God came down, finished the work, and opened the way by grace through faith alone.
